Survival
Sir,—Regarding the articles appearing in the world's press, which should be alerting us to looming disaster threatened by the ever-accelerating burning of fossil fuels with its effect on terrestrial climate and weather, I would point out that such people as Heyerdahl, Cousteau, St Barbe Baker and others have repeatedly warned
of our very premature extinction if we continue to alter the delicately balanced survival conditions of our species. St Barbe Baker has said that in destroying the great rain forests man is drastically reducing his oxygen supply, while Heyerdahl has emphasised this in his references to the oil-slick film covering seas and oceans hindering evaporation and altering cloud movement. For the mind of nature is infinitely superior to the ‘logic’ of man. Then Cousteau has spoken on related potential disaster caused by the unrelenting destruction of species contributing to the life-cycle. And 200 oilladen tankers leave the Persian Gulf daily so economics and destruction must win — Yours, etc., W. J. COLLINS. February 7, 1982.
