Village cleared
NZPA Manila The ' Philippine Defence Minister (Mr Juan Ponce Enrile) has ordered an investigation into the reported moving of some 32,000 southern Philippine villagers into protective villages, reports in Manila say.
The Association of Lawyers and human rights groups reported at the weekend that the entire town of Laac in southern Davao del Norte province had been forced to leave their homes and stay in specified makeshift centres in line with ,; tary search-and-destroy
operations against Communist dissidents. . The Defence Minister said he was not aware of this. Mr Enrile said he had asked his southern Philippine military commanders to “explain the relevance of such practices to their operations,” newspapers reported. He noted that so-called “strategic hamlets” established in Vietnam in the past, which seemed to be similar to the ones reported in Davao del Norte, had "failed miserably to help win the war against the Viet Cong guerrillas.”
