One of New Zealand’s rarer birds, the Southern Crested Grebe, has been restored to health at the Avian Welfare Project’s aviary in Avonhead. The bird, which was brought to the aviary on Wednesday suffering from a form of paralysis and debilitation is one of only 250 known to exist in New Zealand. All are in the South Island. The director of the clinic, Mr Jim Baggstrom, said he hoped the bird would be released today.
