Man remanded

A man. aged 25. accused of abducting a girl under 16 with intent to have sexual intercourse with her. was remanded without plea in the

District Court yesterday. The unemployed boilermaker. from Wellington, is charged with unlawfully taking the girl from Christchurch on January 30. Judge Fogarty extended the interim order for suppression of the defendant's name which was made when he first appeared-in court last Saturday.

The police opposed bail because "the man was infatuated with the girl and her grandparents were concerned for her safety." said Sergeant J. E. Dwyer. The Judge heard further reasons for police opposition to bail in chambers.

The defendant was granted bail of $2OOO and ordered to report daily to the Central Police Station. He was remanded until February 15.
