Increase in sculling entries

Sculling events have attracted a marked increase in entries — especially in the women’s intermediate, and lightweight classes — for the New Zealand rowing championships at Lake Waihola from March 1 to 6. That trend has been welcomed by officials because of the school of thought that a good sculler will make a natural oarsman, whereas the reverse does not always apply. The total entry of 671 crews is 50 down on that for the 1979 regatta at the same venue, but this is still regarded as very satisfetory by the organising committee.

Fewer entries were anticipated because of the everincreasing costs of boat transport across Cook Strait, the distance many North Island clubs have io travel with the extra leave mem-

bers consequently require, apd, to some extent, the fact that the Auckland provincial championships are a week later than usual.

Most' popular events are the intermediate single sculls (41 entries), the senior singles (40), and the intermediate coxed four (40).
