Fencers perform well
The New Zealand under-20 fencing team acquitted itself well at the Australian under-20 championships in Canberra and an Australia Day tournament also in Canberra. VI P. Kell (New Zealand) was second in the foil at the under-20 championships, and New Zealand won the team event, heading the more favoured Australian state teams. In the epee S. Martin (New Zealand) was third and Kell sixth, and New Zealand - was third equal with New South Wales in the team event. Kell was fourth in the men’s sabre and in the women's toil S. Goddard was fifth. At the Australia Day. tournament. an open event involving most of Australia's top fencers. Martin and Kell reached the quarter-finals of the foil from an entry "of 71. Goddard and J. Lloyd were semi-finalists in the women’s foil which had 47 entries.
