Violence

Sir,—l support the Rev. Jim Consedine: violence begets violence. We see the effects of this all around us today, both in New Zealand and overseas. The place to counteract thoughts about violence is in the school and the home. If young people grow up ignorant and are not even asked in their School Certificate examination paper to define the essence of good citizenship, how can we honestly expect them to be anything other than copiers of people they see on the cinema and television screens? If we want to end violence for good, we can do it only by teaching our children the ethics of good citizenship. At the same time, somebody in authority should see to it that films debasing the human individual are barred from our cinema and television screens. Prevention always has been and always will be far better than cure. If we fail to recognise this we pay dearly for our ignorance.— Yours, etc., DAVID COYLE. February 2, 1982.
