Smelter discussed
PA Dunedin South Pacific, Aluminium is holding discussions
overseas with a possible third partner for -the proposed Ararrioana smelter. At least three top executives are believed to be involved in the negotiations. However, company officials are reluctant to reveal where the talks are taking
place. The company said recently that it would announce a new third partner by the middle of February. In Hong Kong an N.Z.P.A. staff correspondent reported that the Taiwan Aluminium Corporation (TALCO) is
negotiating for a 25 per cent stake in. the proposed Aramoana smelter.
According to the latest issue-Jof the “Far Eastern Economic Review.” the corporation is keen to set up a joint-venture smelter in a cheap energy country and import part of its production. “TALCO is negotiating with Gove Alumina of Australia and Fletcher Challenge of New Zealand to hold a 25 per cent stake in a proposed smelter in New Zealand,” the report says. “Another possible partner is ALUSAF Aluminium of South Africa, from which TALCO is negotiating to buy ingots."
