Trainer’s predicament
Special correspondent , 7’- Invercargill The Jack of suitable.'races to prepare jumpers in Southland has forced the Invercargill . owner-trainer Bert Crooks to give his 10-year-old gelding, Jack Dugan, a start in the Liquor. Industries Highweight at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting at Riccarton today. “I had to start him against the open sprinters at Gore last week, which wasn’t fair on him at his age,” Mr Crooks said. “There are just no races to prepare jumpers like Jack Dugan, Paulmont, Folay or
Off An' ,On, down south," he said. “The highweight at Gore only caters for B-grade jumpers, which rules out a start for Jack Dugan, and I want to get another race into him before he starts over hurdles' at Invercargill next Saturday.” Although only seven gallopers accepted’ for the open staying event at Gore, Mr Crooks did not think it would be fair to start Jack Dugan against younger horses. Mr Crooks will also start Jack Dugan’s stablemates, The Fluter and Fuso, at Riccarton today.
