British shipbuilding up

Things are looking up for Britain’s long-suffering shipbuilding industry with the recent announcement of new orders. Total sales could rise to between £4SOM and LSOOM this

year with orders worth £240 million already announced. The nationalised corporation now has a merchant order book of about £6BO million which is well up on recent years. Big orders have come from Hong Kong, Greece, and Canada, while Japanese yards are claiming a decrease in numbers of orders received. plus a plus a plus a European governments are reportedly resisting new Common Market proposals that would restrict their powers to regulate ships in their ports on the basis of safety, adequate crewing, and other factors. A Paris meeting will be held to oppose E.E.C. Commission new Europe-wide “port state” rules on the inspec-. tion of ships and exchanges of information about surveys in European ports. All E.E.C. members with a maritime interest, except Luxemburg, are expected to resist the move with additional support from Norway, Sweden, Spain, and Portugal.
