Patchwork definitions
Once a vital skill, patchworkers today can enjoy the craft as a hobby. The techniques can simply be adapted to modern requirements. Those’ intending to start patchwork should be aware of the following definitions:— • Applique — Also called applied work, laid-on work and patchwork. To applique is to sew a small piece of fabric to a larger one. • Backstitch — A stitch used in hand-sewing either to strengthen a line of stitching or to secure the thread at the beginning or the end. beginning of the first stitch and bring it up a stitch length ahead. • Piecework — The kind of patchwork made by sewing small pieces together to form a larger piece. • Backing — The bottom or lining layer of a quilt. Usually muslin or calico. • Batting — Also called filler, stuffing, or wadding. The fluffy middle layer of the quilt, batting creates warmth by providing insulation. Usually cotton or dacron. • Block — A unit of patchwork design, usually square, used by itself or repeated to build an over-all pattern in a quilt top. • Mitre — A right angle.
