$30,000 in harbour?
Two handbags, which may contain up to $30,000 in cash and jewellery, may be lost forever in the Waitemata Harbour.
The bags were lost during a boating accident off St Heliers Bay a week ago. One of the bags belonged to Mrs Rosa Anatonio Smith, aged 36, who died in the accident.
The other bag is owned by Miss Lerma Vivar who was on the boat when it capsized on the harbour. Miss Vivar said she had about $l5O in cash in her bag and $2850 worth of jewels, including diamonds and sapphires.
She said Mrs Smith had about $6OOO in cash and several thousand dollars worth of jewellery in her bag. The women had the jewellery in the boat with them because Miss Vivar said they did not believe it was safe to leave it at home. Mrs Smith had a large amount of cash .left over after making payment for the boat.
The police are not searching for the bags.
