Nine months jail

A man was jailed for nine months when he appeared for sentence in the District Court yesterday on three charges of unlawfully taking cars, and a charge of possession of keys capable of being used for car conversion. The defendant, Kevin Chan Yan, aged 26, a labourer, was appearing for sentence, before Judge Frampton. His sentencing had been advanced a week at the request of counsel (Mr W. Rosenberg). Two other co-offenders are still to be sentenced, after

being convicted along with Yan. The offences took place in Christchurch and Lyttelton, when three cars were taken to drive to the port, and return. Mr Rosenberg sought leniency for the defendant. The Judge said the defendant had previously been shown lenience by being given non-residential periodic detention for offences that warranted imprisonment. He had a list of offences going back 10 years.
