Slime ‘dispersed’
Wellington reporter Slime which has affected fishing in Golden Bay and Tasman Bay in recent months has broken up and dispersed, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. The slime was formed by plant plankton which bloomed under favourable climatic conditions, the Ministry said. The phenomenon was not new and had occurred in the Nelson region
previously in the 1860 s, 1901, 1960, and 1964. , Slime blooms have also , developed at other times at . Westport, Wellington, , Hawke’s Bay, the Bay of o Plenty, and the Hauraki Gulf. □ The Ministry said that the slime was not a toxic blanket, killing marine life / or rendering fish unsafe to 1 eat. But fishing was pre2 vented by the slime forming - strands and wisps up to i several metres long, which - became interwoven and i layered in the water.
