Impressive kart debut
Shane Drake made an impressive debut in the 100 cu cm junior class at the Christchurch Kart Club's Frank Shuter Memorial meeting at the Carrs Road Raceway on Sunday. Drake finished second over all in the class despite automatically starting from the rear of the field. He had previously driven for two years in the midget section. A series of crashes reduced the fields in some classes with eight of the 16 entries in the 125 cc Gearbox competition withdrawing before the fifth heat. Tony Haxell rolled his kart in one event before colliding with the safety fence and wrecking his machine in another. John Hamilton also wrecked his Yamaha, while Nelson’s Leigh Paulin blew his motor.
