Police drop Alicia lead
PA Auckland Detectives investigating the Alicia O’Reilly murder have ended inquiries on a further suspect. The man, who was extradited from Australia last year, is in jail awaiting trial on a charge of indecently assaulting a young girl. Hairs belonging to the man
have been tested and have fallen within the category of hairs found in the dead gid’s bed where she was raped and suffocated in August, 1980. The hairs were thought to have belonged to the killer. The officer in charge of the homicide inquiry, Detective Inspector Barry Matthews, said yesterday he
had again spoken to the man in jail but could take the case no further with him. Police working on the killing have spoken to as many known sex offenders as possible in connection with the inquiry. Mr Matthews said he still had a few people to speak to in relation to the murder.
