Bastion Point re-occupied
PA Auckland More than . 100 protesters re-occupied Bastion /Point last evening at the start of a Maori campaign which will peak at the Waitangi Day celebrations next -week. Many at the rally organised by the Waitangi Action Committee slept overnight in tents erected on a small part of the site which was cleared by the police in 1978 after after a 17-month occupation by land protesters. A march to Waitangi will start from Bastion Point this morning, and an organiser said those making the full
trip would march in relays of about 30. The protesters plan to arrive at Waitangi on February 5, a day before the celebrations to commemorate the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. The Waitangi Action Committee does not recognise the treaty, and chose to highlight the land grievance at Bastion Point to launch its campaign this year. Several protesters were arrested after a skirmish on the Waitangi marae during the festivities last year.
