Conciliation sought
PA Palmerston North The Foxton Racing Club intends to take its dispute with the Theatrical Workers’ Union over race-day workers to a Labour Department conciliator. The club's secretary Mr Charles Pearce, said it took the decision after a meeting with union representatives. The racing club had planned to let the local Lions Club man gates and sell tickets for yesterday's race meeting but union pressure resulted in the club retaining the 50 pensioners who traditionally do the job. Giving the work to the Lions Club would be a breach of the award and would rob the pensioners of a chance to earn a few extra dollars, said union secretary, Mr Frank Thorn.
The club agreed to drop the decision for yesterday's meeting but said the union would have to come up with reasons why the Lions should not do the work at its May meeting by mid-February.
