NZPA London Renault’s new “world car.” the Renault 9, has been voted car of the year for 1982, narrowly beating the Opel Ascona/Vauxhall Cavalier from General Motors. The Renault, which will form the basis of models to be built in America, Africa and South-East Asia as well as France, received 335 points from an independent jury of 52 journalists from 16 European countries.

The General Motors front-wheel-drive cars, built in Germany and Britain, received 304 points. The new Volkswagen Polo was third, with 252. The Renault 9 is a conventional front-wheel-drive “three box” saloon, with a separate boot, which was designed to appeal to world markets. It has two engine sizes: 1:1 litres and 1.4 litres, giving top speeds of up to 160 km/h, with good fuel economy.
