TV programmes

Sir.—Concern for television's content (Maureen Garvie’s article. January 19) will continue so long as the public are denied representation in deciding what the content shall comprise. The only sane approach toward television is to treat it as offering nothing more than entertainment. To take it seriously, in that it is a guide as to how we should behave, can only be acceptable to — one hopes' — that minority devoid of doubt. It television. under its present ownership. does nothing else, it should sharpen our critical faculty and make us aware that the’ medium is not so important as it would like us to think it is; simply because nothing issues from it that makes it worth our while to protest and change it. That it could be upgraded to perform a useful service to society, is beyond doubt: so long as the public continue to be indifferent, it is not worth the effort.—Yours, etc..

L. J. ROBINSON January 19, 1982.
