Antartica

Sir,—Your eminently sensible editorial article was headed “Antarctic research." Thus it should surely remain. Many of your readers must have been as incredulous as I was to learn from Mr P. H. C. Lucas that it was necessary for our State delegation to “persuade" the assembly of the world's foremost conservation body “to recognise” that it would be vital to protect the fragile Antarctic environment. Mr Lucas’s remarks serve only to confirm that the New Zealand stance is simply one of “controlled exploitation” rather than a free-for-all. What a sad end to 25 years of worthy scientific endeavour that Wellington will soon host a conference, the aim of which is to make exploitation respectable. The Antarctic Treaty parties have abandoned the original, far-sighted aspirations of this unprecedented document, instead of strengthening it to withstand today’s greater threats to the concept of an international science park. Our standing as a nation is degraded accordingly. — Yours, etc., ERIC BENNETT. Wellington, January 19, 1982.
