Aust. P.M. ‘at poll opening’
PA Auckland The chairman of New Zealand Young Nationals, Mr Peter Kiely, was puzzled when the Australian Prime Minister (Mr Fraser) told him in Sydney last week: “I watched the campaign opening with interest.” Knowing full well that the New Zealand Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) had opened the National election campaign in Hamilton last year, Mr Kiely asked: "You weren’t there in Hamilton, were you?” According to Mr Kiely, Mr Fraser replied: “No, I was at the opening.”
Mr Kiely has said that not wanting to contradict the Australian leader, he just looked at him blankly. Mr Fraser explained: “The campaign opened in Melbourne and I was there.” (An apparent reference to the Commonwealth heads of government conference in that city last year.) Mr Kiely was a guest of the Australian Young Liberals movement at their national convention and met Mr Fraser at a lunch. Three Young National executive members were among the 300 delegates at the convention, at which Mr Kiely was a guest speaker.
