Christian-belief conflict
In the wake of the Eric Sides case, nine employers are claiming that it is against their “Christian beliefs” to deal with trade unions and they are asking the Arbitration Court to exempt them from some requirements of the Clerical Workers’ Award. • The applicants in the case to be heard later this year protest that the law as it stands interferes with what
they say is their God-given master-servant relationship. The employers quote extensively from the Bible to support their view that to be forced to negotiate with trade unions, as compelled by the award, deprives them of basic rights and denies them freedom of conscience.
