Russian rockets hit plant

NZPA Lyons Five old Soviet-made antitank rockets were used in an attack on France’s first fullscale breeder nuclear reactor power plant on Tuesday. Four hit the structure, but caused only minor damage to a concrete wall, officials said yesterday. The police had first announced the rockets, fired at the plant from across the Rhone River, appeared to have been stolen from the French Army and then that they appeared to be homemade.

The plant is two years away from completion and there was no danger of radioactive leaks because the reactor is not loaded, officials said. The reactor is designed to withstand a fullscale missile attack or the impact of a crashing airliner.

Official sources later said the 60mm hollow-charge rockets, dating from the 19605, were Soviet-made and a carrying case found on the firing site carried inscriptions in Cyrillic script.
