Sharks off Nelson
PA Nelson Nine sharks were seen within 100 m of a Nelson beach yesterday: the fifth sighting’of sharks in the area in two weeks. A radio-sponsored spotter pilot, Mr Pat Pascoe, saw the sharks about 9.40 a.m. and said that the largest three were about 3m long. He said. “They just seemed to be lying in the sun.” On a later flight Mr
pascoe saw that the sharks had separated and had moved to deeper water, from where two headed toward Tahunanui Beach, near Nelson and the others headed toward Rabbit Island’s beach, to the west. The first sighting was reported to Nelson Airport's control tower. The police then alerted local lifesavers and yacht club officials, who warned swimmers to leave the water.
