Edgar batted best
Although he was out for three on Saturday, Bruce Edgar finished the Shell Cup round-robin cricket matches with an aggregate of 449 and an average of 149.7. Not unexpectedly, that left him a clear leader in the Cup batting averges. Of those who played three or more innings, the next best were John Wiltshire (63.7), Lance Cairns (48), Richard Hadlee (47.7), Andy Roberts (47.2), Evan Gray (46), Trevor Franklin (44.8), John Morrison (43.3), Geoff Howarth (43.2), Robert Vance (41), Peter Rattray (39.2), Martin Crowe (37.5), Robert Anderson (37.5), Cran Bull
(34), Rod Latham (33). John Reid (32), and Paul McEwan (31.7). Of the bowlers with five or more wickets, Graham Wheeler of Wellington' finished the best average — 9.3; behind him were Junior Williams (15.7), Hadlee (16.1); Peter Hills (17.2), Brian Cederwall (19.4), Dayid Stead (20.3), Cairns (21.6), Martin Snedden (21.6), Steve Maguiness (22), Gary Troup (22.3), Warren Stott (23.3), Sth Gillespie (24.1) Steve McNally (28), Cliff Dickeson (28:2) and Denis Aberhart (28.&). Of just as much interest, in the context of limited over cricket, is the rate at which
the bowlers conceded their runs, . j
Hadlee did best there, with an average of 2.27 runs an oyer. Next come Hills (2.30), Maguiness (2.39), Bruce Blair (2.80). Williams (2.91), David O’Sullivan (3.08), Glenn Bateman ■ (3.12). Snedden (3.30), Dickeson (3.38). Troup >(3.47), Stephen Boock (3.48),. and Cederwall (3.50).
Unexpectedly, some of the bowlers with reputations for particular accuracy were relatively expensive. Lance Cairns was. eighteenth with 4.04, AberHarf nineteenth with 4.07 and Ewen Chatfield twenty-second with 4.40.
