Deserved win for Wellington
PA Auckland Another dismal batting effort from Auckland and some more stead}- play from Wellington allowed the southerners to take a deserved and clear-cut win in their Shell Trophy cricket match at Eden Park yesterday. The win. by "146 runs, enabled Wellington "to maintain its healthy lead in the championship race, keeping hopes for a classic confrontation with second-placed Northern Districts in Wellington this week-end very much alive.
Wellington, which scored 277 and 204 for seven declared, to which Auckland replied with 157 and 178. fully earned the 19 points it won from the match. The no-nonsense bowling of Ewen Chatfield and Evan Gray, coupled with the same solid approach by Gray and skipper John Morrison with the bat laid the foundation for the victory which, as early as the second of the nine sessions in the match, looked likely.
