The reading-recovery programme would be extended beyond Auckland and Hamilton, said the Minister of Education, Mr Wellington, in Whangarei yesterday. The programme, which focuses on children aged six, involves intensive teaching on a one-to-one basis daily for about three months.
Professor Marie, Clay, of Auckland University, an authority on the teaching of reading, developed the programme which, said Mr Wellington, offered specialised assistance to children identified as being “at risk” after their first year at school.
