Rabbits plague Alexandra orchardist
PA Dunedin A plague of rabbits is threatening the livelihood of an Alexandra apricot orchardist. Mr. Ted Brown.
The rabbits have virtually destroyed 200 young trees by chewing off the. lower bark, and Mr Brown is afraid that they will attack 3500 young seedlings. •
Until the Alexandra Pest Destruction Board begins this season's . poisoning, Mr Brown has taken up his own eradication programme picking off as many rabbits as he can with a .22 rifle.
“There were just hundreds of .them, everywhere.” Mr Brown said. HeLhad neither the time, “nor the bullets” to deal with 'them. '''
The pest board's executive director, Mr *W. Pedofsky, said that the Alexandra Advisory Committee, which was set up to look at the known problem areas-of the district, was pressing; ahead with its studies. But he* admitted that this did not help Mr Brown with his immediate problem.
