Research chief is C’wealth president

The regional director of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries Research Division in the northern South Island, Mr A. D. H. Joblin, has been elected president of the Commonwealth Association of Scientific Agricultural Societies.

Mr Joblin has represented the South East Asia and Pacific region on the executive of C.A.S.A.S. since the organisation was formed in 1978.

The association is made up of six such regions, and exists to promote agricultural science throughout the Commonwealth. Mr Joblin was president of the NewZealand Institute of Agricultural Science in 1979 and 1980.

“I’m very pleased that the appointment will provide an opportunity to promote the positive aspects of New Zealand’s relationship with the Commonwealth,” he said. “And its stress on generating self-help among the developing members of the Commonwealth is very welcome.”

C.A.S.A.S. provides fellowship for scientists from developing countries to visit other Commonwealth nations to study agricultural projects. A seminar on selfsufficiency in food production in the Pacific was held last August.
