Sample netting for salmon
Greymouth reporter The Westland Acclimatisation Society has given permission for the Tasman Salmon Company to sample net for salmon at the mouth of the rivers in its territory, south of the Taramakau River. The company releases juvenile quinnat salmon raised near Hokitika, at Kaniere. These salmon spend two to three years at sea before returning as adult fish. The netting is an attempt to determine whether the salmon released from certain rivers are returning to the same rivers. , A successful project could mean that the salmon-rearing project at Kaniere could be extended, and a new type of fishing developed for the area. Anglers would have the opportunity to catch the fish as they entered the rivers to spawn, while the rest would be caught in traps run by the company, and processed.
