Sir Garfield Sobers guest speaker

Sir Garfield Sobers, the former West Indies cricket captain, will be the principal speaker when the Old Collegians club celebrates the opening of its new pavilion on February 16. Sobers is acknowledged as the finest all-rounder the sport has produced. He was a superb batsmen an outstanding fielder, and a bowler with the ability to send down quick stuff in one spell and tricky left-arm wrist spin in another. Among his 26 test centuries was a score of 365 not out which still stands as the highest in international cricket. And his aggregate of

8032 runs at an average of 57.8 was only recently passed by Geoffrey Boycott. As well he took 235 wickets, second behind for former world re-cord-holder Lance Gibbs, for the West Indies.

Other speakers in a dinner at the Old Orchard will include the former Prime Minister, Sir John Marshall, and Mr Brian McClelland, a Queen’s Counsel. The pavilion called the T.W.C. Tothill Memorial Pavilion, honours one of the club’s founder members. Mr Tothill, a former club captain and patron of the club, was also chairman of the New Zealand Cricket Council.
