U.S. trip for town clerk

The Town Clerk of Ashburton. Mr John Ewen, will be one of two New Zealand local-body officers to visit small American west coast cities next month on a study tour. Mr Ewen and the Town Clerk of Matamata. Mr William Curragh. were chosen from 23 applicants from municipalities with populations of 20.000 or less. The five-week trip to California. Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia is sponsored and financed by the New Zealand Institute of Town Clerks. It has been arranged with the help of the International City Management Association. Later, two American city managers will come to New Zealand as part of an exchange. Messrs Ewen and Curragh will work as a team in their study of various aspects of municipal government and

management, spending about three or four days in each city. One Californian city. Tustin. near Santa Ana. is a sister city of Matamata. Another. Ashland. Oregon, is about the size of Ashburton. The New Zealand officers will also attend a state conference of city managers in San Diego and visit the larger cities of San Francisco, Seattle, and Vancouver during their trip north.
