Frontline obliges Lalor at Reefton
Special correspondent Reefton The Ashburton trainer, Jim Lalor, returned to his home town with a strong
team for the Reefton Jockey Club’s annual meeting and was well rewarded: his charge, Frontline, won the Reefton Gold Cup.
A winner at Greymouth in late November, Frontline had to survive an inquiry after the connections of the second-placed horse, Papabois, protested against the winner on the ground of interference shortly after they turned for home. After a lengthy inquiry, the placings were allowed to stand.
Though Frontline was a disappointing seventh at his last start, Lalor was nevertheless confident that he would run a bold race. A start was not assured for him until early yesterday morning.
Settled midfield by Grant Davison, Frontline moved up quickly from the 600 m and quickly went to the leaders. The favourite, Papabois, which had led from barrier rise, went clear with Frontline and it was at this stage that the alleged interference took place. By the 200 m Papabois appeared to be beaten but he fought on well for second, three lengths in advance of another Lalor runner, Sir James.
A southern visitor, Napiat, confirmed his recent good form with an easy win in the Shirly Lodge Handicap, second leg of the T.A.B. double.
He was in front from barrier rise and never looked like being headed. Gold Refrain fought on well for second after sharing the early pace, while Keyman ran the race of an improver, fighting on well for third.
