Thames abandoned after two races
PA Auckland The first day of the Thames Jockey Club’s annual meeting was abandoned after the second race yesterday following a torrential downpour. A deputation of jockeys, stipendiary stewards and club officials decided that the track had become too slippery and was unsafe. Conditions were ideal when the meeting opened in overcast but warm weather with the track hard and fast. A few showers fell as the first race got under way, and the rain became heavier in the following hour. The second race was run in a deluge and one horse, News Flash, almost slipped over on striking a puddle down the back straight. Results.— (T.A.B.
