Wind dogs N.Z. rowers

PA Auckland Two plucky rowers attempting to row round New Zealand were yesterday forced to turn about and head for the shelter of Great Barrier Island. 10 miles behind where they were on Tuesday. The brothers, Steven Harre, aged 32, and Max Dedekind, aged 31, said by radio-telephone yesterday that strong winds gusting to more than 21 knots were pushing them backwards in spite of sea anchors. He said the two would lay to anchor until the wind became more favourable.

The brothers left Auckland on December 22 on their anti-clockwise, 4500-mile circumnavigation of New Zealand.
