Good suburban play

Several outstanding performances were recorded in the Christchurch Suburban Cricket Association’s competitions on Saturday. Although conditions were cold and blustery, seven teams passed 200. In the match between Harewood and St Albans-Shirley W.M.C.. 436 runs was scored: Stephen Cotton scored 112 not out.

M. Snelling, of State, scored 119 not out.

Two matches resulted in firstinnings ties: one in the senior-A grade and one in the third grade. After dismissing Christchurch W.M.C. for 126, Hoon Hay replied with 127 for the loss of only one wicket. For Christchurch W.M.C, J. Knowles, with 47, and R. Smythe (25) contributed most of the runs. Tony Pugh bowled well to finish with four for 24. Batting for Hoon Hay, Philip Agent and Kevin Williams remained the not-out batsmen, with 54 and 51 respectively. At Barnett Park, Sumner, with 103 for four, made no mistake in overtaking Southern Districts’ total of 102. Roger Campbell batted • intelligently for his 62 runs and he was ably assisted by 24 runs from the bat of R. McLeod. When Southern Districts batted, only Roger Queree showed any resistance, with a patient 41 runs. Bowling for the final time for Sumner, Alan Hounsell, who will transfer'in the new year to Lower Hutt, finished with another bag of five wickets. Merivale-Papanui and Harewood tied on the first innings in their match at Edgar Mclntosh Park. Wayne Tinker again led the Merivale-Papanui batting with a fine ’6l. Bowling for Harewood, Alan Harrison and Steve Holden, with three wickets apiece, were the most successful bowlers. Harewood showed better form as it reached a score of 158 for nine. Tony Fleete scored freely for his 39, with Tony Te Amo again notching up a useful 28. The evergreen Merv Willis was Merivale-Papanui’s most successful bowler, with four wickets for 45 runs.

Woolston W.M.C. continued its winning streak bv accounting for Upper Riccarton at Riccarton Domain. Bob Kerr (54). for Woolston W.M.C.. and Dave Kennedy (68 not out), for Upper Riccarton. both batted confidently and contributed to much of the match. The win ensured that Woolston W.M.C. remained

at the top of the competition table.
