Long season at Caroline Bay
Holidaymakers in Timaru are assured of a bonus this year — the Caroline Bay Association's seventieth annual carnival will run for an unprecedented three weeks. Proceeds from this additional week will be' given to the Aorangi Park Association for use in future development of Aorangi Park. | Christmas season begins oh Sunday evening’when the community service committee of the Timaru South Rotary Club will hold carols by candlelight at the Timaru Gardens.
The carnival proper will get under way on Boxing Day when the association’s flag is raised. The Mayor (Mr S. R. Bennett) will open the carnival. At 2 p.m., the “Welcome ’B2 -Show,” featuring “The Mainland. Connection” will make its, debut.on stage. That night, there will be a “super holiday” housie in the Bay Hall. On Sunday, December 27, the Timaru Country Music Association will present a country music concert. This will precede the Princess of the Sands contest. Games and riding devices will be in full swing — as will a “rock ’n’ roll” dance for teenagers in the Bay Hall. On December 28, young contenders in the Master Caroline Bay contest will
flex their muscles in the games area east of the Bay Hall. In the afternoon, the Junior Miss Caroline Bay contest will be held.
. City bylaws prohibit dogs on the bay, ■ but other pets from iguanas to sheep and goats may be paraded in the pets’ parade on December 29. Finalists in the Junior Miss Caroline Bay contest will appear behind the footlights in the sound shell that night. A fancy dress parade for boys and girls is scheduled for 10 a.m. on December 30, as is the Mother and Son contest. The next day, entrants in the Miss Caroline Bay contest will make their first appearance. The winner will receive $250, a modelling course of her choice, cosmetics valued at $lOO, a garment worth $6O, and a meal for two.
At midnight, a bonfire will be lit on the sands of Caroline Bay. On New Year's Day, the finals of the Miss Caroline Bay contest will be held. In the evening, Radio Caroline is sponsoring a rock concert. Attractions on January 2 include the Junior Miss Cutie contest and Mother and Daughter contest. . “Cookie Bear” will come out of hibernation on January 3. Tiny tots will parade on Monday, January 4, and contestants in the Caroline
Bay Holiday Queen contest will appear in street wear.;
There will be sand-modell-ing for girls on January 5 and races for boys. The finals of the Caroline Bay Holiday Queen contest are timed for 7.30 p.m. on January 6. Boys will have the chance to produce sculpture
on the sands east of the sound shell.
A highlight on January 7 will be the Queen of the Carnival contest, which will run until January 9. A Miss Cutie contest will take place that day. The band will occupy the stage throughout the carni-
