Canty surf team chosen
The absence of people on Christmas holidays has played a key part in the selection of the Canterbury surf livesaving team to compete against Australia at Taylors Mistake on January 17.
Bryce Ward, a leading contender for the six-man rescue and resuscitation team and as a surf race and belt swimmer, and Carl Immers, a tube rescue specialist, were not considered for the team announced yesterday. They are not available for team training in the period before the international and were accordingly not considered by the selectors, Messrs J. A. Lee, B. C. J. Turpin and H. E. Turnbull.
So that factor obviously caused a rethink, as did the surf race yesterday in the Hertz carnival. Two leading surf race contenders, John Dimick and David Clarke, were twentieth and twenty-first respectively in the surf race. Another leading contender to miss was Ken Jones, with the selectors electing to include a drill specialist in Tim Bodgen That has been at the expense, probably, of the beach relay team, and that now seems likely to include two of the North Beach boat
crew, John Clarke and Rob Lindsav, with Tom von Biel the specialist and Simon Davis his back-up. Three juniors have been chosen: Brent Todd, the board specialist, and Lachie Marshall and Grant Forbes, for the swimming events. The team, which Geoff ' Walker will captain for the first time, is:Seniors: Walker, Dave Conder, von Biel, Davis, Chris Ellis, Neate, Phillip Seal. Kelvin Bishop. Bodger. _ , Juniors: Marshall, Forbes, Todd. Boat crews: Steve and Dave Pipe, Mark Carrington. John Clarke, Rob Lindsay.
