The Dimple narrowly wins Hazlett Stakes

Special correspondent Dunedin Riding tactics brought the desired result when The Dimple beat Powley in a cliff-hanging finish to the James Hazlett Stakes at Wingatui on Saturday. The Dimple, which had been left eight lengths behind Powley when she attempted to chase her over 1600 m a

month earlier, was ridden off the pace on Saturday and ran on boldly to win by half a head.

Powley made the pace as usual with The Dimple settling in fifth place on the outer about four lengths back. The Dimple was still three lengths from Powley at the 300 m, then closed rapidly.

Jim Pankhurst called on Powley for an extra effort but there was no real response, Powley battled bravely but The Dimple was clearly superior. ■ Jim Pankhurst, the rider of Powley felt that the fact that she had not raced for a month may have accounted for her apparent lack of response.

The final acceptance will probably be made today for The Dimple in the Dunedin Gold Cup (2400 m next Saturday. She earned a I.skg rehandicap for her win on Saturday, which puts her on 55kg, along with Mr Ay Bee. She is also an acceptor for the Timaru Cup (1600 m next Monday. Her immediate programme will depend on satisfactory arrangements to fly her stablemate, The Twinkle, north for the Auckland Cup on New Year’s Day. The Twinkle, the Dunedin cup topweight with 57.5 kg, is also in the Timaru cup, a race she won last year. Ali Robinson, who rode The Dimple on Saturday, will not be available next Saturday as he was suspended by the judicial committee of the Otago Racing Club, on a charge of interference in an earlier race on Saturday.

The Dennis Brothers, of Woodlands, who own and train The Dimple had another win on Saturday when The Wink was successful in the First Bargain Maiden. The Wink, a three-year-old filly by The Dimple’s sire, Noble Bijou, out of The Kurd, the grandam of The Dimple, won well and looms as a hope for the Show Gate Stakes at Washdyke next week.
