A welcome newcomer
New Zealand racing owes much to John Richardson and Ken Browne, who have laboured mightily to come up with “Racehorses of New Zealand 1980-81,” published by Dalgety Bloodstock. In close to 800 pages they give all the information that could be wished for about the 6000 thoroughbreds, jumpers and flat horses, that raced in New Zealand last season.
There is full-page treatment for the top performer ranging down to the one-liner for the lumbering maiden, each horse shown in alphabetical order in its section with its breeding, colour, age and its trainer. Each is also given a rating, shown in halfkilograms, in an effort to assess its ability. One or two ratings of South Island-trained horses
might surprise, but they do not concern “name” horses. The over-all result of an ambitious exercise can hardly fail to satisfy. New Zealand racing needs such an annual, and one can now only hope that the initial response will be strong enough to assure its future. —J. J. Boyle
