Burnside thrashed as Albion increases lead

Albion was an easy- 10-0 winner in six innings over General Lee Burnside when the top two senior A women’s softball teams met in a final pre-Christ-mas clash, at Papanui Domain yesterday. As already decided. Albion will represent Canterbury at the national club tournament in March and only competition points “rode" on the match. Albion started the game strongly, scoring three runs in the first innings with Linda O’Cain, Nat Hazelwood, and Penny Salton all crossing home plate. A further two runs were added in the second innings when O'Cain and Hazelwood again scored. From this point on Albion was in total command of the match and never looked like allowing a run in. Vicky Paskell scored in the third innings after hitting a twobagger to left field and at this point Robyn Storer took the mound in place of Jane Earnshaw. The move, however, was not enough to contain the strong batting line-up of Albion. Christine Ten deservedly scored in the fourth and although Albion were kept scoreless in the fifth the final onslaught came in the sixth innings. Both Penny Salton and Vicky Paskell scored their second runs of the game while Sharon Constable also scored.

The only innings Burnside looked like scoring was in its third turn at b?t. Ra Hapi made base on an error, stole to second, then Marilyn Lee put down a safe bunt bringing Hapi round to third. With one down and runners on Burnside seemingly appeared ready to score with its lead-off, Storer, in the box.

Storer thumped the ball to left field, much to the delight of the Burnside bench, as its runners raced round the bases. Confusion then reigned for some time as the runners were sent back to their bags, and Storer being called out for illegal batting. In the following three innings Albion had Burnside three up, three down, to secure a no-loss season to date.

There were only three games played on Saturday and the highlight was the young Papanui side’s 11-5 win over the thirdplaced Monowai. General Lee Burnside demolished Western Suburbs, 11-0, in five innings, while Western Suburbs, in its earlier game of the day comfortably beat A.G.C. United. 13-7. Papanui 11, Monowai 5 In what must be classified as the major upset of the season the young Papanui side doubled its points total through this win. Past the first innings Monowai was never in the game. Throughout the match Papanui batted effectively and fielded tightly, turning on its best performance to date. Nicola Moore and Carolvn Manson both scored in the

second innings then Papanui added a further-three runs in the third, one being a home run by Moore. Lee Glasson crossed home plate in the fourth innings and with the score at 6-2 in the fourth the strong batting of the Monowai side could have pegged the runs back.

The tide turned dramatically in the fifth for Monowai when Papanui sealed the game by scoring five runs.

Monowai went on to score three further runs, but the Papanui side maintained pressure in the field and never looked like crumbling when the pressure went on by safe hits from Monowai.

Western Suburbs 13, A.G.C.

United 7 In a high scoring game for senior softball Western Suburbs walked away easy victors. opened the scoring with a right field home run off the -bat of the designated hitter Sue Johnson. Not to be outdone Paula Gregory did exactly the same in Suburbs’- second turn at bat.

United scored its first run in the second innings when Barbara Smith crossed home plate. Then in the fourth innings United looked to be the stronger of the

two sides when Liz Siatago, Smith, Charmaine Lee and Sue Ewing all scored.

In its fifth turn at bat an agitated Suburbs coach gave his team a stern talking to and the results in the batters were almost miraculous. A total of nine runs were scored as Suburbs went through its order and five players had a second turn at bat. General Lee Bumside 11, Western Suburbs 0

General Lee Burnside stamped its dominance on the game right from the start by scoring four runs and going throughout its order. Robyn Storer was the first to score and was followed by Penney Dunckley, Anthea Feaver and Sharon Mansfield, Dunckley, who went on to score a further two runs, could consider herself lucky to have scored as the plate umpire made a controversial safe call on her as she slid into third.

The second innings for Burnside had Linda Manning and Dunckley scoring.

In its third turn at bat Suburbs managed to contain Bumside, but the fate of the game was sealed in the fourth innings when Burnside again went through its order scoring a further five runs.
