103 today
Mr Bobby Campbell (above) is “old enough and does not need any more birthdays,” according to a fellow resident in the Rannerdale War Veterans Home in Upper Riccarton. The eldest resident in the home, and one of the oldest citizens in Christchurch, Mr Campbell will be 103 today. He is very deaf, but he is still hale enough to demand a kiss from a female reporter. Mr Campbell has lived at the Rannerdale Home since he was 94, after spending almost all his earlier life in Christchurch. He was born in immigration barracks the day after his parents arrived
in New Zealand from Scotland. His daughter-in-law, Mrs A. Campbel], said yesterday that he had worked for many years as a wood-turner at the Addington Workshops and was a keen croquet player until he was 90. He served in both world wars. His wife and three sons had died although Mrs Campbell said he had “I don’t know how many” grandchildren and greatgrandchildren throughout New Zealand. Mr Campbell will celebrate his birthday with a party at the Rannerdale Home today.
