Pregnant teenagers
Sir,—Several correspondents (December 17) attacked my letter of December 15. They seem to have missed the main point of my letter which was about the increase in teenage pregnancies and of sexu-ally-transmitted diseases, as reported recently by medical specialists. Your correspondents accuse me of being unChristian, puritanical, lacking
compassion, critical of ‘‘immoral” behaviour, and against the D.P.B. They are wrong and should read my earlier letter, again. Indeed, I have a great deal of compassion for pregnant unmarried girls, and for their offspring. Perhaps if there were more education of teenagers in the use of birth control devices there would be fewer pregnant teenage girls and fewer illegitimate children. One correspondent said that Christ said, "Let those without sin cast the first stone." He also added when he spoke these words, “Go. and sin no more." Quoting scripture will get nobody very far.—Yours, etc.,
R. J. BURNS. Lyttelton, December 17, 1981
