Drinking in moderation
Sir,—Regarding the article on drinking in moderation in Tuesday’s issue: If drinkers are experiencing family difficulties, financial, legal and health problems because of their drinking and are unable to do anything unilaterally about it, then surely they are past the stage of being taught social drinking skills. If they have these problems then they should be referred to an alcohol treatment centre or to Alcoholics Anonymous. I feel this type of publicity is highly dangerous to all people with genuine alcohol problems. It has been proved time and again by studies overseas that it is impossible for an alcoholic to drink socially. The criteria used for referring people to tnis centre suggest that they have a serious problem and are being offered a “way out” from an early facing up to that
problem, causing further physical and mental deterioration before being finally admitted to a treatment centre for alcoholism.—Yours, etc.. D. I. LORIMER. December 16, 1981.
