Rakaia River
Sir,—The applications for irrigation water rights for the Rakaia River ask for a total of 90 cubic metres per second. The average flow of the river during October-March is 227 cubic metres per second and I understand that low flows drop below 80 cubic metres per second. Mr Lewthwaite claims that the Ministry of Works foresees no conflict with wildlife, fishery or ecological interests and minimal conflict with boating and hydro-electri-cal development. Given the facts above the Values Party finds these claims unbelievable. Accordingly we, and many others, have registered our objection to these schemes. — Yours, etc., ALAN WILKINSON.
