Christmas trees sell well
A bigger demand for Christmas trees and decorations is apparent in department stores this year. “Christmas trees and decorations are selling extremely well,” said one store manager. “More people are decorating their houses with bells and all the trimmings that go with Christmas trees."
Stocks of Christmas lights and decorations were dwindling rapidly, and in a few days the selection would be very limited, he said. Sales of Christmas cards are well up to expectations and probably slightly higher than last year.
One store had sold out of packets of cards on Friday evening, but had more on the shelves on Monday morning. The usual presents . had been selling well, said the manager of one Christchurch store.
“Children’s toys and games are still being bought by parents and grandparents, but more are buying clothing for children. There is a greater emphasis on practical presents,” he said. People were buying more expensively than last year, and retail trading was buoyant.
