Abortion stand
PA Wellington Pro-abortion political candidates could now start taking pride in their principles and stop pussyfooting around on the issue, Women's National Abortion Action Campaign spokeswoman Ms Helen Wilson has said in a statement.
“As a result of the elections it is obvious that a firm ‘women’s right to choose’ stand will not lose them votes,” Ms Wilson said.
“On the contrary, areas in which W.O.N.A.A.C. campaigned vigorously before the elections, such as the Wellington region electorates, showed a rejection of sitting anti-abortion M.P.s and strong support for prochoice candidates.”
However, the precarious nature of Parliament and the still sizeable S.P.U.C. lobby meant women must not be complacent. It was up to women outside Parliament to ensure their voices were heard, Ms Wilson said.
