NZPA Melbourne The Australian Arbitration Commission yesterday ratified a landmark agreement giving more than 400,000 metal workers pay rises and reduced hours. A full bench, headed by the
commission’s president (Sir John Moore) took only a few minutes to hand down the historic decision before a packed courtroom. The commission endorsed a consent agreement between metal industry em-
ployers and unions giving workers pay rises of up to $5O a week, and a 38 hour week from March 15. The decision is regarded as the most significant since the end of wage indexation in July this year.
