Wool record goes back to Otago

PA Dunedin Otago wool regained the price record at yesterday’s Dunedin wool sale, two bales of super-fine Merino hogget fleece making 631 c a kilogram. The wool in Reid Farmers’ catalogue, was sold on account of R. I. Scott, of Pendella, Gimmerburn. The 17-micron fleece had a 74 per cent yield. The previous record price of 620c-’was ,at the last Timaru sale pm December 7. The Wool Board bid on 18.5 per cent of the offering and bought 1425 bales (about 5 per cent). The official report said that compared with the Timaru sale the market for Merino fleece was in buyers' favour, Halfbred fleece up to 5 per cent dearer, and Halfbred skirtings firm. Compared with the Napier sale held on Thursday crossbred fleece and second-shear were firm. Crossbred skirtings were in sellers’ favour, and oddments unchanged. The main competition came from the Far East and Eastern Europe supported by Western Europe and New Zealand mills. The 28.511 bales offered were Merino, 12 per cent; Halfbred, 12 per cent; crossbred, 51 per cent; oddments, 25 per cent. The Merino included some very attractive grower lots. The halfbred was generally of good length and colour. There was a heavy weight of crossbred fleece of good average style, although the South Otago and.
